How much do national sport organizations spend on administration?
Boards and funders ask it every budget season. Here is the answer from verified financial statements only, for Canada’s national and multisport organizations.
Administration, by size of organization
Share of total spending. The bar shows the median; the text shows the range for the middle half.
Reliance on federal funding, by size
Share of total revenue from Sport Canada and high-performance funding.
What this means for your board
An administration share is not good or bad on its own: it depends on size, staffing and what an organization books as administration. It becomes useful when you compare it with organizations of a similar size, over several years.
In OrgBase you see where your organization sits in its peer group, year by year, with the source of every figure.
How we worked it out
- Canadian national and multisport organizations with a verified fiscal year in OrgBase whose statement shows a separate administration line. Organizations that spread administration across other lines are left out, not counted as zero.
- We use the fiscal year with the most usable organizations. Spending categories follow OrgBase’s grouping of the statement’s lines; staff pay may sit elsewhere depending on the organization.
- Median and middle half (25th to 75th percentile). No organization is named, and a group of fewer than five organizations is not shown.
